For me, ideas are an endless fountain of distraction. My brain is constantly cycling on “hey, this would be a great business idea”
Hours later I have thought through the interfaces, marketing plan, technologies, potential revenue, and how I’m going to spend that money.
The whole process can be a good exercise, but is mostly a waste of my time – primarily because these thought cycles distract my brain from working on the task in front of me.
I find it easy to dump them, and get them out of my brain.
So here they are, if any of them are interesting to you, please email me, I’d love to talk about them.
- Who’s on First Twitter App – I actually built this as an exploration in playing around with Twitter.
The idea was just to re-play Who’s On First as a twitter conversation.
- Favicon Project – hah. the idea here was an endpoint to hit to generate every possible favicon ever.
Even 16×16 with 256 colors, that’s a ridiculous amount of favicons. So the idea was every hit would generate the “next” favicon, until we hit them all.
- Bad Sport – Videogame idea. Combining the two best types of video games – sports and combat fighting.
The idea was that it would be a Mortal Combat style fight game, where each round began in a new sporting event at the moment it turns into a fight (batter gets hit by pitch, dunk rejected) You could also re-create famous sports fights.
- Dog Fight – Videogame – You fight as different breeds of dogs, working your way up the breeds. Obviously celebrity dogs (Snoopy, Scooby Doo, etc unlockable) And the boss is Michael Vick. My wife is a Veterinarian, which makes this even funnier. (to me)
- Them Apples – Mobile App – I really like this one. The idea is based off a game some old friends from home play, competing with each other for how many phone numbers they can get. Notifies your friends when you get a new number, hashes the number, so you can see if the girl is a slut and already gave one of your friends her number. Also potential twilio tie-in to give out a working, but not your real number. Yes, it’s a Good Will Hunting reference.
- Rubbed Out – Facebook App – Way to tag all of your facebook friends that you’ve thought of while masterbating.
- Vote You Gay – Facebook App – Way to vote your friends gay. We had an old college buddy who we knew was gay first day of freshman year, but he had a girlfriend from hs, and didn’t come out until years after college. But really we all knew. Even if a lot of your friends will do it as a joke, maybe you need to look in a mirror and think. Obviously it would be awful when the first 14 year old kills himself because of this.
- In Loving Memory – Basically Virtual Gifts (money goes to charity) for funeral / memorials. There seems to be this whole generation who won’t necessarily send an actual gift or donation when a loved one / friends parent passes away. So think virtual deli platter, flowers, or a drink for a $X donation to the Cancer Society or whatever.
- Baby Tramp Stamps – Temporary Tattoo Tramp Stamps for babies (and their slutty moms) Don’t underestimate the white trash / gag gift population in this country. Just imagine letting me babysit your one year old daughter and you come home to see her with a “Daddy’s Little Girl” temporary tat on her lower back.
- Baseball Road Trip – Mobile App – My dad and I used to travel the country in the summers visiting baseball stadiums. Basically a mobile app with major and minor league maps along with upcoming 3-5 days schedules. Thought maybe you could sell it to Holiday Inn, the official sponsor of the MLB road trip.
- BillsMonthly - Web App for simple recurring billing for small service providers (landscapers, window washers, etc) At the time this was a much harder problem to solve than it is now.
- Screen Watchers Guild – I have some friends that watch a ridiculous amount of movies, and needed a way to keep track of what they’ve seen / downloaded. Thought the name was kind of clever. Browser plugin for netflix / imdb. Oscar predictor, etc.
- BilledUpon – This was kind of a complicated one. The idea was to make a market, like codecanyon, but with a different license for developers / agencies to expand on projects. I was paid by some agencies to heavily customize some purchasable projects. The problem was that there was no legal structure for these enhancements to make it out to anybody else in the world.
So the idea was a marketplace where you could build something. (Say a form creator, and sell it for $20) Then I could add on a Paypal Pay to Confirm button, create a fork, and sell my new project for $30, I get $10, original creator gets his $20. This way we wouldn’t be walling off contributions.
