Ruby Metaprogramming Aha!

Friday, June 27th, 2008

At the recommendation of Joe O’Brien, I watched Dave Thomas’ fantastic bottom-up explanation of Metaprogramming in Ruby.

The talk provides a very lucid explanation of a lot of Ruby (and Rails) magic that always gets glossed over in any intro to ruby kind of talk. It’s kind of the same way I never really *got* certain concepts until I made my 9th grade teacher completely show me Proof By Induction.

Anyway, I highly recommend it for any computer-science curious types.
It crescendos to wonderful payoff where this piece of code makes complete sense:

class Class
	def meta
		class << self
			self
		end
	end
end

class Dave

	class << self
		def self.hi
			puts "WHATS UP META!"
		end
	end

end

Dave.meta.hi

5 Year Middlebury Reunion

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Thats Art Welder Andy on the right and his wonderful old hall-mate Meg, who wins the award for the coolest person I haven’t talked with in five years. If you’re reading this Meg, HI!

Saw a ton of great people, reconnected with even more. Oliver and others took tons of pictures, which will probably show up on facebook soon enough. It was a beautiful, free for all party weekend, where I witness a Middlebury first, watching a public safety officer help someone carry a new keg into Coffrin at 1:30 am.

The President’s Baccalaureate Address.

I’ll be in Somerville / Cambridge until Wednesday, then to Germany.
Get in touch if you want to chill.

Why I love Facebook on My Birthday.

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Because in addition to a warm greeting..

You get to figure out who logs in when based on when they write happy birthday on your wall.

Or whether they give a shit about you or not.

I love all of my friends very very much.

And in case you are curious, in addition to 27 being my favorite number, I’ve made it as far as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain.

Today begins my east coast tour. Flying to Burlington to spend time with my wonderful Aunt, Uncle and Cousin, then my 5th Middlebury Reunion, then Boston…

Oh and to answer your question,  best present ever:

What I want to know before I sign up for a new site.

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

how about being able to see how many of my contacts are already using it.

Almost EVERYONE I know is on facebook.

EVERY recruiter who wants me to be a Perl Developer in Boca Raton, Florida is on LinkedIn.

Not enough people were on Twitter.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know how many people I know on [friendfeed/ pownce/mixx/etc/etc/etc] ?
